K-League: Can Gwangju Extend Daegu’s Goal Drought?

Daegu FC vs Gwangju FC

Daegu FC still haven’t been able to stop their downward slide. They’ve now gone winless in each of , the first time they’ve gone that long without a goal this K-League season.

Despite their slump in form, Daegu are still fourth in the table due to Pohang Steelers’ own struggles in recent weeks.

Nevertheless, Daegu will look to get back to scoring goals and winning games once again when they host Gwangju FC this weekend.

The Griffins have consistently been picking up points of late, although the K-League 2020 odds don’t fancy them getting all three points on their visit to Daegu Stadium.

Talking Points

Daegu in a goalscoring dry spell

Despite having one of the most formidable attacking duos in the league in Brazilians Cesinha and Edgar, Daegu FC have suddenly found goals hard to come by over the last few weeks.

Failing to score in a 2-0 defeat to championship contenders Jeonbuk was understandable, but they followed that up with a shock defeat to bottom club Incheon United, who had not won a single game this season up to that point.

And last weekend, they laboured to a goalless draw in their match against Gangwon FC, who have the second-worst defensive record in the league with 26 goals conceded. Unlike against Incheon, Daegu barely even created that many goalscoring chances against Gangwon, which is worrisome.

After a torrid run in June and early July which saw him score in five straight games, Cesinha has gone off the boil. He has scored just once in his last six appearances.

Daegu depend heavily on Cesinha to provide their attacking quality, and he has delivered for the most part. He has eight goals and four assists this season. But Daegu will need the Brazilian to get back to his best for them to rediscover their scoring touch.

Daegu have been surprisingly disappointing at home of late, losing three of their last four at Daegu Stadium. Although, two of those defeats were against the top two in the league: Ulsan and Jeonbuk.

And despite their recent struggles, Daegu are still the highest scorers at home with 17 goals in nine games.

Gwangju getting better results

After a tough stretch which saw them lose five of six matches, Gwangju FC’s K-League 2020 results have improved in recent weeks. The Griffins are unbeaten in their last four matches and have drawn their last three in a row. Although, they remain third from bottom in the table.

They got a good point away to Pohang Steelers and had an exciting 2-2 draw at home to Gangwon. They also held FC Seoul, who had won three games in a row, to a goalless draw at home last weekend.

Apart from slowing down one of the hottest teams in the league in FC Seoul, Gwangju should also be encouraged by the fact that they kept a rare clean sheet.

Gwangju, who have conceded 23 goals this season, had only kept two clean sheets all season prior to the FC Seoul match.

But they shut down the capital side’s attack as they allowed FC Seoul just two total shots, none of which were on target. Scoring goals has been an equally pressing problem all season, although they did play well against Seoul. They had 11 shots, five of which were on target.

Felipe remains the team’s main goal threat with eight goals this season, but Wong-Sang Eom has been offering some much-needed support of late. The 21-year-old has scored three goals in his last four matches.

History

Daegu and Gwangju haven’t crossed paths too often in recent years. They’ve met just nine times in the K-League 1 and four times in K-League 2. They also met in the K-League play-offs in 2012. The two sides are level with five wins apiece with five draws in their 15 meetings since 2011.

Daegu have won the last two meetings in K-League 1, though, including their first meeting this season. Dejan Damjanovic bagged a brace to lead Daegu to a 4-2 away win. Felipe also had two goals as Gwangju had two players sent off.

Betting Tip

??
Daegu FC vs Gwangju FC 1X2 Daegu FC @ 1.86
August 30, 19:00(GMT+8)

Despite Daegu’s decline in form, SBOTOP odds still have them as significant 1.86 favourites to win at home. Gwangju FC are priced at 4.00 to score an upset, while a draw is 3.40.

Daegu clearly have the superior quality in their side, and while they’ve disappointed of late, it’s just a matter of time before they get back on track.

Gwangju won’t be an easy opponent to play, but Cesinha and co. should still have enough to get that much-needed win at home.
