Borussia Dortmund vs SC Freiburg

Borussia Dortmund are back in the top four, and they can be on top of the Bundesliga table this weekend.

They’re currently in fourth with 34 points, which is within arm’s length of table leaders Bayern Munich, who have been dropping points these past few games. Union Berlin and RB Leipzig occupy the second and third spots with 36 and 35 points, respectively.

Edin Terzic’s men are currently enjoying a three-game winning streak to start 2023, but they’re in for a tough test when SC Freiburg visit Signal Iduna Park.

SC Freiburg have 34 points like Borussia Dortmund, but they’re one spot behind them due to goal difference. They have to make up for lost ground if they’re to return to the top four, and beating the hosts is a good first step.

Talking Points

More options available for Borussia Dortmund

Don’t look now, but Borussia Dortmund are making a run for the top spot, and they’re going to be a handful to deal with now that they have a healthier squad.

Edin Terzic can finally count on Marco Reus to be available again, while Gio Reyna has been in good form lately despite not playing last time out.

Sebastien Haller made his starting XI debut against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, and Jude Bellingham made his comeback after serving a one-match suspension against Mainz.

TO SEE UPDATED ODDS

The former Ajax striker played a role in their first goal against Die Werkself, as he dummied Julian Brandt’s cross from the right side, which allowed Karim Adeyemi to finish inside the penalty box in the 33rd minute.

BVB’s second was recorded as an own goal from Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba, but Jude Bellingham was a huge reason why it happened in the first place.

The team’s youngest captain led a counterattack, and he should’ve finished in transition, but Tapsoba inadvertently netted Marius Wolf’s cross from the right flank. They would take it, though, since it essentially gave them three valuable points.

Borussia Dortmund should be able to get more positive Bundesliga 2023 results in the next few weeks since they now have a lot of ammunition, which should help them mount a significant title challenge.

SC Freiburg back on track

Christian Streich will not let victory slip away when they play against BVB in the Bundesliga
SC Freiburg boss Christian Streich shouts from the sideline during their Bundesliga match against Frankfurt

SC Freiburg finally got their first win of the year against Augsburg, and they needed it or else they would’ve fallen to sixth place.

Gregoritsch kicked off the scoring with a wonderful finish past Rafal Gikiewicz in the 14th minute after Yannik Keitel teed him up.

Augsburg replied through Mergim Berisha’s penalty in the 29th minute. But straight from the kick-off, Michael Gregoritsch launched a long ball to Ritsu Doan, who dished it to Lucas Holer for his first goal of the season, which gave SC Freiburg back the lead.

And then Philipp Leinhart put the game beyond doubt by heading in a corner from Vincenzo Grifo.

Christian Streich is hoping that this could get them going, as they’re aspiring for European football. After facing BVB, SC Freiburg have winnable matches against VfB Stuttgart, VfL Bochum, and Bayer Leverkusen this month.

History

Borussia Dortmund have been dominant at home against SC Freiburg, as they’ve only lost one of their last 22 league home games against SC Freiburg (W18, D3).

This season, they are also undefeated in six league home games (W5, D1), and they’ve never gone longer without a home loss under Edin Terzic, who’s also unbeaten in his first six home games at the start of 2021.

Meanwhile, SC Freiburg have lost their last two road games in the league, which is as many as they had in their previous 13 matches. Their last road match was a 6-0 result in favour of VfL Wolfsburg, their worst defeat under Christian Streich in the Bundesliga.

BVB beat the Black Forest 3-1 earlier this season in August, as Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Youssoufa Moukoko, and Marius Wolf sparked the comeback in the second half to nullify Michael Gregoritsch’s goal in the 35th minute.

Betting Tip

The SBOTOP Bundesliga 2023 odds favor Borussia Dortmund to win at home, as they’re installed at 1.68, whereas SC Freiburg are pegged at 4.50, and chances for a draw are at 3.95 in the 1X2 market.

With talented attackers from both sides, this might be another high-scoring affair, so we’re looking at Over @ 2.75 at 1.82 and Total Goal 4-6 at 2.85 as viable alternatives.

But in the end, Borussia Dortmund should edge SC Freiburg on Saturday because of their brilliant form at home, although the Black Forest aren’t going down without a fight.
